Right, gather round. We need to talk about Brazil's location on the world map, because if you've ever glanced at a globe and thought "that's a lot of green," you'd be dead right. Brazil is the fifth-largest country on the planet, and it sits in South America like a lad who's claimed the entire couch and refuses to budge. It takes up roughly 47% of the continent, which means every other South American country is basically squeezed in around the edges like passengers on a Ryanair flight to Lanzarote.
Picture the map of South America. Now picture Brazil. Grand, isn't it? It borders every single country on the continent except Chile and Ecuador, which is a bit like being the person at the party who's spoken to absolutely everyone except the two lads standing awkwardly by the fridge. To the north, you've got Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. To the west, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. To the south, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. That's ten neighbours in total, which is a serious amount of boundary disputes waiting to happen. Brazil doesn't just sit on the map — it sprawls across it, arms out, going "sure, I'll take that corner too."
The equator slices straight through the top of Brazil, cutting across the Amazon rainforest like a fella drawing a line through a crowded spreadsheet. Because of that, the northern chunk of the country is hot, humid and home to the largest rainforest on Earth — a rainforest so vast that the other countries nearby probably check in on it the way you'd check in on a mate who's gone very quiet. The Amazon basin spills into Peru, Colombia and a few others, but Brazil holds the lion's share, because of course it does. It's the same story everywhere you look: Brazil gets the big slice, everyone else gets the crumbs. Down south, the climate cools off as you approach Uruguay and Argentina, which is a relief, because not everyone fancies sweating through a Tuesday.
If you're ever playing a geography quiz and someone asks where Brazil is, don't overthink it. Point at the middle of South America, move your finger to the right slightly, and you'll hit it. It's the country that makes the rest of the continent look like it was drawn in afterwards by someone with a smaller pencil. Its capital, Brasília, sits inland in the
