There is a map of Africa in almost every old school textbook, and if you look closely enough you can practically see a European diplomat at the Berlin Conference of 1884–85, slightly overcooked on brandy, leaning over a sheet of blank paper and going, “yeah, ah, just draw a line there, mate.” No Africans were in the room. No one had actually visited most of the places they were dividing. And yet somehow, with the confidence of a bloke who has watched one YouTube documentary, a handful of countries carved up roughly 30 million square kilometres into neat little rectangles. It is the geopolitical equivalent of cutting a birthday cake while wearing oven mitts and then insisting you are a pastry chef.
The rules of the game were gloriously simple. If you wanted a chunk of Africa, you had to tell the other Europeans, plant a flag, and preferably sign a treaty with a local leader who may or may not have understood what he was agreeing to. That was it. Turn up, wave a flag, boom, you are now the proud owner of a country you cannot pronounce. France walked off with a massive slab of West Africa that looks, on the map, like someone spilled a bucket of territory and refused to mop it up. Britain grabbed a vertical stripe from Cairo to Cape Town and spent decades trying to build a railway through it because apparently borders were not enough of a flex. Germany, Belgium, Portugal and Italy all joined in, elbowing each other like shoppers at a Boxing Day sale, except the sale items were other people’s homes.
Here is the truly funny part, and by funny we mean deeply grim: about 30 per cent of African borders are straight lines. Not rivers, not mountains, not the edge of anyone’s actual homeland — just lines. Someone in a warm office in Europe decided that a particular degree of longitude was now a nation, and roughly 100 million people woke up living in a country that had not existed the day before. The Gambia is a thin squiggle jammed into Senegal because Britain wanted a river route and France wanted everything else; it looks like a worm that got lost. Namibia has the Caprivi Strip, a long panhandle poking east for absolutely no geographical reason other than Germany wanting access to the Zambezi. A child drawing this with a crayon would be told to try again. A continent got stuck with it for over a century.
So next time you see that map, spare a thought for how it was made. Not with surveys, not with consent, but with rulers, ego and a total disregard for the people standing right there on the ground. The borders stuck. The consequences are still very much the main event. And the lesson is timeless: never let a room full of people who cannot agree on lunch decide where a country ends.
