Patty Smyth is far more than simply the wife of a tennis icon. Born in New York City, she first captured public attention as the lead vocalist of the new wave band Scandal in the early 1980s, delivering the enduring hit "Goodbye to You." She later launched a successful solo career, earning Grammy and Academy Award nominations for her songwriting, including the beloved duet with Don Henley, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough." Her artistic credibility and distinct, emotive voice won her a dedicated following, and she has continued to write, record and perform for more than four decades. For McEnroe, his wife's creative independence and grounded perspective have provided a reassuring counterbalance to the often intense spotlight of elite tennis. Their mutual respect is widely acknowledged by friends and family, with McEnroe frequently noting Smyth's frankness and integrity as qualities he admires most.
