Map Of Africa Before Colonization

I have always been fascinated by old maps, but nothing has captured my imagination quite like the European depictions of Africa from the centuries before colonisation took hold. There is something quietly humbling about staring at a sixteenth-century chart and realising how much of the continent was drawn from rumour, guesswork, and outright invention. Vast stretches of the interior were marked with mountain ranges that did not exist, kingdoms positioned hundreds of miles from their true locations, and enormous blank spaces labelled simply as unknown. For me, these maps tell a story not about Africa itself, but about the limits of European knowledge and the remarkable civilisations that thrived largely beyond the reach of foreign eyes.

The Blank Spaces That Spoke Volumes

When I first examined reproductions of early modern maps of Africa, what struck me most was the honesty of the empty areas. Cartographers in Lisbon, Amsterdam, and London freely admitted what they did not know, leaving the interior largely unmarked while clustering detail along the coastlines they had actually navigated. Yet this blankness has often been misread as evidence that Africa lacked history or organisation. Nothing could be further from the truth. While European mapmakers sketched speculative rivers through empty space, the continent was home to flourishing states such as Mali, Songhai, and Kanem-Bornu, each with administrative systems, trade networks, and scholarly traditions. Timbuktu, sitting at the edge of the Sahara, was a beacon of learning whose manuscripts recorded a world that European maps could barely hint at. I find it a powerful reminder that the absence of a place on a foreign map never meant the absence of the place itself.
