Long before cars, phones or supermarkets, a remarkable civilisation grew up beside two great rivers in a land called Mesopotamia. Today we often call that region Iraq and parts of Syria and Turkey. When tamariki look at a map of ancient Mesopotamia, the first thing they notice is how the rivers snake across the page like two long ribbons. Learning to read that map is like opening a treasure chest of history, because almost everything about daily life in Mesopotamia — farming, travel, trade and even storytelling — was shaped by the water flowing through it.
The two star rivers are the Tigris and the Euphrates. On a simple map they sit side by side, running from the mountains in the north down to the Persian Gulf in the south. The Euphrates is the longer, slower one, while the Tigris hurries along more quickly. Between them lies a strip of fertile land that the Ancient Greeks called Mesopotamia, which means "the land between the rivers." If you trace both rivers with your finger, you are following the same path that farmers, boat builders and traders used thousands of years ago. Older students might also spot the Zagros Mountains to the east and the wide desert to the west, which helped keep this green river valley special.
Rivers gave Mesopotamian families almost everything they needed. Each spring the waters rose and spilled over the banks, leaving behind rich mud that made crops grow beautifully. People learned to build canals and ditches so they could carry water to fields further away, and this clever engineering meant they could grow barley, dates, onions and lentils. Communities soon grew into busy cities such as Ur, Uruk and Babylon. In those cities, scribes used soft clay tablets to write in wedges called cuneiform, recording everything from grain supplies to school lessons. Children today may be surprised to learn that the very first schools were probably started in this region, and some of the oldest surviving stories in the world, including the tale of a great flood, come from beside these waterways.
Try printing a plain outline of Mesopotamia and colouring the rivers in bold black lines while shading the surrounding land in grey. Label the Tigris, the Euphrates, the Persian Gulf and two or three famous cities. You could also make a model using blue ribbon for the water and sand for the desert edges. Ask yourself a few detective questions: Why did towns appear close to the rivers rather than far out in the dry plains? Why might floods have been both helpful and scary? What would happen to a farm if a canal became blocked with mud? Answering these questions helps the map turn from a flat drawing into a real place full of people, animals, markets and music.
The word Mesopotamia means "land between the rivers." The Tigris and Euphrates both begin in the mountains of modern Turkey and flow south-east toward the Persian Gulf. The land between them was often called the "Fertile Crescent" because its soil was so good for growing food. Irrigation canals, clay tablets, the wheel and early written laws all belonged to this river world. Keeping a simple map handy means you can always picture where these amazing first cities stood, and understand why water has always been one of the most precious resources on our planet.
