I have always been the sort of person who lingers over old atlases in second-hand bookshops, and nothing draws me in quite like a map of the Cold War. There is something haunting about seeing the world reduced to two great blocks of colour — the red of the Soviet sphere bleeding across Eurasia, and the blue of the Western alliance holding the Atlantic rim.
