World map. World map
Right, gather round, history buffs and map enthusiasts! Today we're taking a squiz at the Crusades, that chaotic series of medieval expeditions where thousands of Europeans hoofed it halfway across the known world, armed with swords, faith, and a truly alarming level of geographic ignorance. From 1096 onwards, crusaders tramped from Western Europe to the Holy Land, and honestly, half the trouble could have been solved with a decent map and a compass. Spoiler alert: they had neither, at least not in any form we'd recognise today. So buckle up as we navigate the bumpy road to Jerusalem, one dodgy direction at a time.
Let's be real here: if you plopped a satellite map like this one in front of Pope Urban II in 1095, he would have either declared you a wizard or a heretic, possibly both. Back then, European maps were less "accurate cartography" and more "abstract art with opinions". Jerusalem was often drawn at the literal centre of the world, which sounds lovely but did absolutely nothing to help a knight from Normandy figure out how many months of walking stood between him and the Holy City. The First Crusade saw roughly 60,000 folks set off with a vague notion of "east" and an optimism that would make even the keenest optimist blush. Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos took one look at these disorganised bands and probably needed a stiff drink. Anatolia, the Levant, the logistical nightmare of feeding an army across hundreds of kilometres of unforgiving terrain β none of it was properly mapped, and crusaders paid the price in blisters, hunger, and the occasional disastrous ambush. A proper world map back then would have been worth its weight in gold, frankincense, and possibly myrrh.
Imagine, if you will, Peter the Hermit leading his People's Crusade in 1096 with a smartphone chirping "recalculating route" every five minutes. Honestly, his mob of untrained pilgrims would have needed it, because they managed to get lost, squabble, and run out of supplies long
