Well, well, well — if it isn’t our favourite hard-court heroine, Jessica Pegula, front and centre at today’s press conference, serving up the kind of deadpan energy that could freeze a Wimbledon strawberry. For those of us who tuned in expecting fireworks, or at least a mildly spicy serve-and-volley with the fourth estate, we instead got something far more precious: forty minutes of Pegula being utterly, magnificently, and hilariously unbothered. It was a masterclass in giving the bare minimum while somehow still managing to be the most compelling person in the room. Honestly, the woman could read a cereal box and make it sound like a Grand Slam final.
The presser kicked off with a question so long-winded it could have doubled as a novella. The journalist asked about her “mental fortitude,” her “tactical evolution,” and something about her “journey” that made Pegula blink twice and glance at the exit like a cat spotting an open window. Her response? A glorious, trademark pause, followed by a shrug that said more than any 500-word soliloquy ever could. When pressed on whether she felt she’d “silenced the doubters,” Pegula deadpanned: “I didn’t know there was a choir.” I nearly choked on my tea. The woman treats every leading question like a weak second serve — she just steps in, whacks it down the line, and moves on with her life. Papers planes were flying over the heads of the assembled hacks, and honestly, we deserved it.
Then came the inevitable query about her opponent’s “dangerous ball-striking.” Pegula nodded gravely, as if receiving vital intelligence, before offering: “Yeah, they hit it pretty hard. I try to hit it harder.” Pure poetry. This is a player who has clearly decided that the press room is simply a place to fill time between physio appointments and her next snack. She was asked about the conditions on court, and responded with the kind of analytical depth you’d expect from a weather app: “It was a bit windy. Then it stopped. Then it started again.” Groundbreaking stuff, Jess. Some reporters scribbled furiously, others just gave up and started drawing origami jets on their notepads, dreaming of soaring away from the banality. Yet here is the funny thing — her non-answers are more refreshing than a whole PR team’s worth of clichés. There is a rebellious honesty to a woman who flat-out refuses to pretend that every three-set grind is a “spiritual awakening.” At one point, asked about her goals for the season, she smiled — and it was the smile of a woman who has seen everything, heard everything, and would rather be walking her dogs. “Just keep winning, I guess. And avoid these pressers.” The room erupted. Jessica Pegula, ladies and gentlemen: a champion on the court, and an accidental comedian off it. She soared, we laughed, and somewhere, a PR flack was having a quiet meltdown. Ten out of ten — would absolutely be grilled by her again.
