Right then, settle in with a cup of tea and possibly a life jacket, because we're about to talk about the two most gloriously over-dramatic rivers in human history: the Tigris and the Euphrates. Tucked away in modern-day Iraq, this soggy strip of land known as Mesopotamia — Greek for "the land between the rivers" — is widely hailed as the Cradle of Civilisation. Which is a bit like saying your first flat was the Cradle of Independent Living: technically true, but there was a lot of flooding, a fair amount of mud, and somebody had to invent everything from scratch because the IKEA catalogue hadn't been written yet.

Any self-respecting Mesopotamian city was essentially a giant, never-ending construction project. Think of the region as one colossal building site where the health and safety officer had drowned thousands of years ago and nobody bothered to replace him. The rivers dumped buckets of nutrient-rich silt on the land every spring, which sounds lovely until you realise it also meant your house, your goat and your mother-in-law's prized clay pot were all suddenly underwater. In response, the Sumerians invented irrigation canals, which was brilliant until rival city-states realised they could sabotage them, leading to the ancient equivalent of flipping someone's hosepipe over the fence. Every time those rivers misbehaved, the locals had to rebuild their zigga-rats and patch up the temple walls. Entire civilisations rose and fell, not because of fiscal mismanagement, but because somebody forgot to reinforce the riverbank yet again. If you've ever assembled flat-pack furniture with a disgruntled partner, you have felt a tiny echo of what it meant to re-mortar a ziggurat using nothing but mud, reeds and optimism.

Then we have the Euphrates, a river that has spent the last six thousand years behaving like a temperamental garden sprinkler that's been left on overnight. The Babylonians, who frankly deserved better, built impressive quays, granaries and protective levees to keep the waters in check. But the rivers, bless their soggy hearts, had other plans. The Euphrates would occasionally change course entirely, deciding, "You know what? I fancy a bit more desert, and I'm taking your
