Right, gather round. You've seen the United States map a thousand times â that big slab of states looking like someone dropped a jigsaw on a table and gave up halfway. But cast your mind back to the 1600s and 1700s and you'll find just thirteen scrappy colonies clinging to the eastern coast like limpets on a rock, all arguing about taxes and whose turn it was to build the road. This is the story of the original thirteen colonies, told as only a map can tell it â with a lot of coastline, a fair bit of swampland, and absolutely no agreement on anything whatsoever.
Picture the map now. Up north you've got New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, all crammed together like passengers on a rush-hour bus, with Rhode Island being the tiny fella who somehow always gets a seat. Then comes the middle crew â New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware â the sensible ones who actually grew wheat and minded their own business.
