If you follow American sport even from a distance, the name Pegula is impossible to ignore. But while Terry Pegula is often the face of the billion-dollar empire that owns the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Sabres, the beating heart of the operation is his wife, Kim Pegula. She isn't just a co-owner with her name on the paperwork; she is a trailblazing executive, a former college athlete, and one of the most influential women in the history of North American professional sport. Her journey from humble beginnings in South Korea to the top of the NFL and NHL is nothing short of extraordinary.

From Adoption to Athletic Stardom

Kim's story begins in Seoul, South Korea, where she was abandoned as a baby and later adopted by an American family, growing up in upstate New York. That spirit of resilience defined her early years. She attended Houghton College, where she wasn't content to simply watch from the sidelines—she competed as a Division II scholarship athlete in tennis, displaying the fierce determination that would later become her trademark in the boardroom. Sport was in her blood before it was in her job title, and that authenticity is why players, coaches, and fans alike hold her in such high regard. She didn't buy her way into sport as an outsider; she came as an athlete who understood the sacrifice, discipline, and teamwork required to succeed.

Breaking Barriers in the Boardroom

Elegant artistic rendering of Kim Pegula as a strong female sporting executive

When the Pegulas purchased the Buffalo Sabres in 2011 and then the Buffalo Bills in 2014, Kim quickly proved she was far more than a silent partner. In 2018, she made history by becoming the first woman to serve as president of both an NFL and an NHL franchise simultaneously. That dual role was unprecedented, and she handled it with a calm, collaborative leadership style that earned respect across two notoriously demanding leagues. She wasn't just managing assets; she was shaping the cultural identity of an entire region. Her focus stretched beyond the scoreboard too, championing women's empowerment initiatives and serving on the NFL's diversity committee. Kim Pegula is proof that leadership is not about the volume of your voice, but the strength of your vision and your willingness to lift others as you climb. Her legacy reminds us that the most powerful plays often happen far away from the pitch, rink, or gridiron.
