World War 2 Map Activity Answer Key

Ah, sure, there’s nothing like a World War 2 map activity to make the whole bloody mess look like a parish league fixture. The answer key sits there in its clean, teacherly font, telling you exactly which arrow meant the Blitz, which dotted line is the furthest advance of the Wehrmacht, and where to stick the little marker for Stalingrad. It’s grand altogether, if you can forget that every line on that map was once someone’s burning front garden, every shaded zone a county where the only ballot was a surrendering white flag. In the black light of history, an answer key is just a way of pretending there is a correct answer to the question of why we had to turn Europe into a smoking heap twice in one century. Still, if you’re marking the blessed thing, let’s look at the legend before you fill in the blank boxes.

The Legend of the Western Front Withdrawal

Answer key legend for the Western Front withdrawal in the World War 2 map activity

Now, this map activity’s legend is a bit of a joke, and not a funny one. You see the key on the right hand side, and it tells you to mark the Allied advance as a solid red line, the German retreat as a dashed brown line, and the ceasefire line as a black zig-zag. It’s neat as a county council roadworks drawing. But the answer key itself knows better: there were no clean lines in the Ardennes, no tidy little dashes in the Falaise Gap. The only true marker would be a big, black cross for every town that got flattened just to shorten the war by an afternoon. When the lads in the back row ask, “Miss, is it occupied or liberated?” the real answer is that the map doesn’t care. You’d be better off drawing a smog of smoke over the whole continent and calling it done. The key for the map activity is only useful for a classroom; out in the real world, the only clear answer was the silence where Luftwaffe raids used to be.
